Alpha
Kappa Psi Mission Statement: Alpha
Kappa Psi's Mission is to develop well trained, ethical, skilled, resourceful
and experienced business leaders. What
is Alpha Kappa Psi? Alpha
Kappa Psi, the first professional fraternity in business, was founded at New York
University in 1904, followed by the establishment of Delta Sigma Pi in 1907 at
the same institution. Alpha Kappa Psi was the first professional business fraternity
to become co-ed. The objects of Alpha Kappa Psi, adopted at the time of its founding,
are 1. to further the individual
welfare of its members; 2. to
foster scientific research in the fields of commerce, accounts, and finance; 3.
to educate the public to appreciate and demand higher ideals therein; 4.
and to promote and advance in institutions of college rank, courses leading to
degrees in business administration. Over
140,000 members have been initiated into Alpha Kappa Psi. Of this number about
4,000 are faculty members, approximately 6,000 are college students working for
degrees in business administration, and the remainder are engaged in business
throughout the United States and Canada, and in other parts of the world. Of Alpha
Kappa Psi's alumni membership, over 17,750 are life members. Members are viewed
as being very loyal, friendly, sympathetic, honest, dependable, and trustworthy.
Among the benefits of being a member, each member has the opportunity to participate
in a number of chapter activities and to be a part of an organization with a strong
sense of pride, honor, history and tradition. Each member is encouraged to take
an active role in the fraternity. There are tremendous opportunities for growth
and leadership on the executive board and various committees. Benefits
of Membership Through its
various alumni groups and members located throughout the country Alpha Kappa Psi
offers a permanent professional association with a selected group of college trained
individuals whose basic backgrounds are of real value in a professional, as well
as a social case. Alpha Kappa
Psi teaches and emphasizes the observance of high standards of personal and professional
conduct and ethics, thus providing intangible benefits of value to the student
during the formative years. In
addition, there are some other intangible values. Chapter life offers opportunity
for improvement of individual personality and ability through the medium of actual
experience. Development of the ability to work with others, to plan and carry
out various projects, to talk before a group, to preside at a meeting, to lead
others, is highly important, and chapter life develops such abilities through
the most effective medium, that of actual experience. Another
benefit is the friendly and informal association made possible between student
and faculty. Because each chapter has faculty members, the opportunity is provided
for joint gatherings during which faculty and students may discuss subjects of
mutual interest on an informal and friendly basis. Contacts
with alumni members in business assist student members in vocational guidance,
aid them to obtain employment, or to secure more desirable positions. Last,
but not least, is the opportunity offered each member to enlarge the circle of
friends and acquaintances. Friends made in college, more often than not, are the
most valued in life, and the close fraternal association of Alpha Kappa Psi enables
the making of friends of the most desirable type. Chapter
